Kent Coalfields

The Dover District Council launched the Coalfields Heritage Initiative Kent (CHIK) project in 2001. This is led by Dover Museum and the White Cliffs Countryside Project. The aim of the project is to record and preserve the mining heritage of East Kent.

There are two phrases of the project. The first is with the creation of a digital archive, comprising photographs, documents, stories, oral reminiscences and video clips. This invaluable resource for the local community will be available online and as a CD-ROM with an accompanying travelling exhibition.

The second phrase is the creation of a trail in the countryside that follows the old coalfield sites. The trail is aimed at walkers, cyclists and horse riders and will feature signage, interpretation and artwork (on the theme of the coal industry).
